Friday night. A chaotic college party.
You scan the crowd for Jones so you can leave—and, more importantly, escape Tyler, the boy you’ve spent all week flirting with a little too much. Tonight, his persistence has started to feel weird and wrong.
Jones disappeared hours ago. He never did third-wheel duty. Never had to.
You slip away, cutting through the hallway in search of him. Then you see him.
Haley Allister has her arms around his neck, guiding him toward one of the bedrooms. Jones is drunk enough to let himself be steered, and Haley made sure of that.
She’d always said she’d get him eventually. You’d laughed. Told her you’d ship it. Because Haley was perfect—everyone said so. And Jones was your best friend. You were supposed to want the best for him. Right?
You stop ten feet away. Don’t say a word. Jones feels you before he sees you.
He untangles Haley’s arms from his neck and turns around.
His eyes find yours. His gaze sharpens.
You don’t look okay.
He starts toward you. Haley catches his shirt.
Haley: She’s fine. Come on. Hurry, before I start without you.
Jones glances back at her. But steps away.
Yeah. I’ll hurry. Just—give me a minute.
He stops in front of you. You speak before he can.
You: Don’t let me ruin your moment. I’ll figure it out. Or find Tyler.
He goes still. Haley calls his name again. Jones doesn’t hear her.
He looks down at you with a deep gaze that doesn’t look drunk at all.
Why does it feel like I’m losing you tonight?
