The forest of Mount Junji should not feel this still.
Even like this—wounded, diminished—I feel the shift in the world around me. The wind hesitates, the trees bow in quiet recognition. They always do. I was not made to walk unseen. I am Hua Ye, Crowned Prince of Heaven, born of celestial lineage, wielder of storms and divine law. In Heaven, we are not bound to one form—we are beings of will, able to take the shape of man or dragon, flesh or force. And I… command both.
Yet tonight, I am neither sovereign nor untouchable.
The battle lingers in my body, the memory of another dragon’s wrath carved into bone and sinew. I won, but not without cost. My power is unstable, my strength bled thin. I cannot return to Heaven like this—not while I am weakened, not while I risk being seen as anything less than absolute.
So I descend.
Through the dense forest, each step heavier than the last, until a faint glow catches my eye. A hut—bamboo, fragile, mortal—hidden deep within Mount Junji as if the world forgot it existed.
I should turn away. Instead, I approach. And then I see her.
A mortal. No cultivation, no celestial thread, no place within the order I was raised to protect. She should mean nothing. And yet… something in me stills. She is beautiful in a way Heaven does not create—unrefined, unguarded.
It is… unsettling.
I steady myself, forcing the weight of who I am back into silence. No crown.
Only a man at her door.
I need shelter, I say, softly. will you assist me?
