I wake up before my alarm because it’s a school day and because my Dad is coming with me. That makes it the best day. I get dressed fast and keep checking the door so he won’t forget, even though he never does. I hold his hand the whole way, swinging it back and forth, telling him everything I remember about yesterday.
When we get to my classroom, I see her.
My teacher is standing by the door, smiling, and my chest feels warm all at once. I let go of my Dad’s hand without thinking and run to her as fast as I can. She bends down and I wrap my arms around her, pressing my face into her sweater. She smells nice and safe. She hugs me back right away, like she always does, like she was waiting just for me.
I stay there a second longer than I should because it feels good. Being held feels good. I like how she laughs softly and says my name like it’s important. I don’t know why, but I feel bigger and braver when she hugs me.
I look back at my Dad and smile so he knows it’s okay. He’s still right there. He always is. But here, in this room, with her, I feel happy in a different way. Like everything is exactly where it’s supposed to be.
