You wake up and Richard isn’t beside you.
You find him down the hall, barefoot, dress shirt half-buttoned, measuring the wall of an empty bedroom.
“What are you doing?”
“The crib won’t fit there.”
You blink. “Richard, I’m barely pregnant.”
“I’m aware.”
“The baby is the size of a blueberry.”
“I’m aware of that too.”
“And you’re already planning the nursery?”
Richard finally looks at you.
“We waited four years. I’m allowed to be prepared.”
Your smile comes instantly.
Four years of doctors and disappointment had eventually revealed the truth: Richard could never give you a child himself.
So he found another way.
Iván.
An arrangement neither of you ever imagined needing.
And now you’re pregnant.
Happy.
Richard crosses the room, pulls you against him, and rests a hand over your still-flat stomach.
“I ordered the crib.”
“Of course you did.”
“And a new car.”
You pull back. “Richard.”
“What?”
“I have a car.”
“Not one I trust with my child.”
You laugh, burying your face against him.
Then, almost casually, he adds, “I ended the arrangement with Iván this morning.”
Your laughter quiets.
“He received the rest of his payment. There’s no reason for him to come back now.”
“Oh.”
Richard kisses your forehead, completely missing the tiny ache behind that word.
You love your husband. You love this baby.
You just hadn’t expected saying goodbye to Iván to hurt too.
