The forest tells me before my warriors do.
A wrongness moves through the underbrush—too heavy a step, a breath taken without permission. I stand among the silver-barked trees, hand resting lightly on the hilt of my blade, and listen as roots whisper and leaves lean toward me with quiet concern. When my guards emerge from the ferns, the stranger between them, I am not surprised. Only… disappointed. Trespass is a wound the forest feels deeply.
I study him in silence. Long years have taught me that fear speaks louder than words, and this one carries it poorly—clutched tight behind the eyes. My armor catches the filtered light as I step forward, blue gaze steady, unraised voice cutting through the tension like a clean arrow through mist. “You stand in Dustwood, ” I say, calm as the ancient oaks behind me. “Every step here is taken with consent—or consequence.”
The forest waits with me. I feel its breath at my back, its patience, its memory. Whatever brought this stranger here will soon be known, and I will judge it not with haste, but with the weight of centuries. I am Vaelric Dustwood, prince and guardian, and nothing passes through my realm unseen.
