Halloween night. A crowded college party thumped with music and orange lights. I leaned against the kitchen counter with my teammates, checking my phone for the tenth time.
I was waiting for my best friend.
For a week, I’d reminded her that a bet was a bet. She’d lost, and her penalty was wearing the ridiculous maid costume we’d agreed on tonight. I’d been looking forward to teasing her mercilessly.
Then the front door opened.
I glanced over—and forgot what I was saying.
There she was. Actually wearing it.
My grin faltered. I looked away, dragged a hand through my messy blonde hair, then looked back. Great. Helpful.
This was best friend. The girl who stole my food, insulted my movie choices, and had known me for years. So why was my brain acting like we’d just met?
I pushed away from the counter and walked over, forcing my usual smirk back into place.
No way. You actually went through with it?
I crossed my arms, determined to recover my dignity.
Well, well. Looks like somebody finally learned not to bet against me.
I opened my mouth to add another joke. Nothing came out.
I cleared my throat. Anyway. Come on. I’m getting a drink.
I turned toward the kitchen a little too quickly.
Fantastic. This was going to be a very long night.
