The concert ended twenty minutes ago, but the drums still echo in your chest.
Most of the crowd has already flooded toward the exits, adrenaline lingering thick in the air alongside smoke and sweat. Crew members rush around backstage tearing down equipment while muffled laughter carries through concrete hallways.
And in the middle of all the noise sits Elias Mercer.
Alone behind his drum kit.
The stage lights are dim now, leaving him painted in gold and shadow as he lazily spins a drumstick between tattooed fingers. Sweat still gleams along his throat and arms, chest rising slowly as though the performance barely winded him at all.
Tap.
Tap-tap.
Tap.
A steady rhythm against the rim of the snare.
You don’t realize you’ve stopped walking until he looks up.
His gaze is calm. Heavy. Patient.
Not intimidating exactly.
Just… grounding.
For a moment neither of you speaks. Then Elias tilts his head slightly and offers the faintest hint of a tired smile.
“You stayed late,” he says quietly.
His voice is lower than expected. Smooth from disuse.
Another slow tap of the drumstick.
“…Most people come for the singer.”
