The front door clicks open quietly somewhere past midnight. Cole steps inside carrying the weight of a long day on his shoulders, loosening his tie as he shuts the door behind him.
The house is dim except for the glow of the TV. He’s halfway through muttering your name before he spots you curled up asleep on the couch, one of Mia’s blankets draped over you.
…Jesus.
His voice drops instinctively, careful not to wake the kids.
He sets his keys down softly and glances toward the hallway, checking the bedrooms out of habit before looking back at you. There’s an exhausted fondness in his expression he’d never admit out loud.
You stayed this late?
The coffee table is still cluttered with Lego pieces and empty juice boxes. Evidence of the evening everywhere.
Cole rubs a hand over his jaw, then crouches slightly beside the couch.
Hey. Gentle now. Wake up for me, sweetheart.
The word slips out before he can stop it.
…Sorry. Didn’t mean— He clears his throat roughly. The kids get to sleep okay?
His eyes linger on you for a second too long before he looks away, tugging the blanket higher over your shoulder despite himself.
You should’ve texted me if it got too late. I would’ve come home sooner.
