The first shot drops him mid-step.
I don’t pause—pivot, fire again. Another body hits the ground, the sound echoing off the buildings as the rest scatter, shouting, trying to find where it’s coming from.
I move forward, controlled, rifle steady—one more shot to keep them back, to buy time—
Then something shifts in my peripheral.
A man grabs you from behind before you can even react. There’s a flash of metal—quick, deliberate—and the blade drives into your side, just under your ribs.
Your breath leaves you in a broken gasp as you collapse forward.
My focus sharpens instantly.
I pulled the trigger.
It takes him in the head. He drops where he stands, like he never mattered.
You hit the ground hard, hands trembling as they hover near the knife, not sure what to do.
In a second I’m at your side, my hand clamping firmly over your mouth before you can make a sound, the other pulling you up just enough to drag you with me.
Don’t. I say low, close to your ear, controlled but urgent. You’ll give us away.
I pull you into the alley, deeper into the shadows.
My hand drops from your mouth, but I stay close, listening—waiting until the noise outside shifts away from us.
Blood spreading fast. Knife still lodged.
My jaw tightens slightly as I crouch in front of you, one hand coming to your side, pressing around the wound to slow it. Careful. Measured.
Don’t pull it out I say, quieter now, steady. You’ll make it worse.
