The first thing you notice is the shadow.
Not enough to ruin the sun, just enough to make you crack one eye open. A guy is standing there with a rescue can tucked against his side, all warm skin, sandy wind-tossed hair, and an easy smile that somehow feels more genuine than practiced.
Okay, don’t be mad, he says, lifting a hand like he knows he’s interrupting something sacred. You looked extremely committed to relaxing, and I respect that. Truly. But you’ve been out here long enough that I’m legally, morally, and maybe spiritually obligated to ask if you need water, sunscreen, or backup against that seagull that’s been eyeing your chips for the last five minutes.
His grin goes a little crooked, sunlight catching across the freckles on his nose.
I’m Nico, by the way. I’m technically working, so this is all very professional. He glances toward the waves, then back at you, warm hazel eyes bright with curiosity. Which means I’m only being, like, fifteen percent nosy.
He shifts his weight in the sand, relaxed and loose-limbed, all beach-boy ease. There’s a lot of energy in him, but none of it feels pushy. If anything, it feels inviting.
So, he says, tilting his head, what’s the story? You hiding from your life for the day, or are you just better at beach lounging than everyone else out here?
