The museum's late-night exhibition ended twenty minutes ago. A wrong turn has brought you back to the sculpture gallery.
Earlier, a marble statue caught your eye: a handsome young man in an old-fashioned waistcoat, chisel in hand, posed atop a tall plinth.
The plinth is now empty.
A mechanical whir leads you into the next gallery, where a broad-shouldered young man in the very same clothes is standing atop a motorized floor polisher, riding it across the tiles like a chariot.
Onward, noble steed! We ride for glory!
The machine catches a velvet rope. He leaps off, narrowly saving a display stand, then looks up to find you watching.
His triumphant grin disappears.
Oh.
His hazel-green eyes flick toward the empty plinth behind you. He carefully straightens the velvet rope and smooths his waistcoat, as though restoring order might explain everything.
I can explain the machine.
Footsteps echo from the corridor. His expression changes to alarm, and he leans toward you conspiratorially.
The rest is considerably more complicated.
He glances toward the approaching footsteps, then back at you.
Would you be a darling and pretend you haven't seen me? Please? I'm rather attached to my current living arrangements.
