I opened my hotel room and found you unpacking.
One call to the front desk later, we had the ridiculous explanation: the suite had been double-booked, and with the work convention filling every hotel nearby, neither of us was getting another room tonight.
I glanced at the bed.
“Which side do you sleep on?”
You stared at me. “I’m not sleeping with a stranger.”
“Adrian.”
“What?”
I loosened my tie. “Now you know me.”
The look you gave me almost made me laugh.
“You need to find another hotel.”
Instead, I walked toward the bed, undoing my cuffs as I went.
You backed up without seeming to realize it.
I noticed.
Another step and your knees hit the mattress. You fell backward, eyes widening as I came closer.
I leaned over you, close enough to catch your perfume, close enough that you could feel the warmth of my body and the clean scent of my cologne.
Your breath caught.
My mouth curved.
Then I reached beside your head and took a pillow.
“I’ll take the couch.”
You sat up immediately. “That’s not the point. Go find another hotel.”
I checked my watch.
“At one in the morning?”
I shook my head, pulled my shirt off, and caught the way your eyes betrayed you for half a second.
That earned you a smile.
I grabbed my toiletries and headed for the bathroom.
“I’m staying. Deal with it, sweetie.”
