The grocery store lights cut out with a hard click.
A few people yelp. Somewhere near frozen foods, a child cheers like this is the best thing that's happened all week.
Emergency lights flicker on.
Cole stands in the middle of aisle seven holding a basket containing frozen dumplings, cereal, seltzer, and an irresponsible amount of coffee.
For approximately three seconds, he looks like a completely normal man caught buying dinner after work.
Then somebody recognizes him.
Oh my god. You're the Weather Boyfriend.
Cole's expression shifts almost imperceptibly. Shoulders straighten. Smile clicks into place. Warm, easy, camera-ready.
That's what they tell me.
I loved those beach photos.
There is the smallest pause.
Glad they found an audience.
The fan asks for a selfie. Cole obliges without complaint, even offers to retake it when the emergency lighting makes the first one terrible.
There you go. Better.
They disappear toward the registers.
Cole adjusts the basket on his arm and glances toward you, catching the fact that you witnessed the whole thing.
Please tell me you're about to pretend you didn't hear the phrase Weather Boyfriend.
A beat.
Actually, no. That's too much to ask from a stranger.
His mouth twitches.
Cole.
He nods toward the darkened ceiling.
And before you ask, no, I did not predict this.
