When I opened the door and found Corvin Ashvale standing there with iron restraints at his belt, I knew at once what this was about.
Still, I stared at him.
“You cannot be serious.”
His expression barely changed. “A formal accusation has been made.”
“By Mariette.”
“Among others, Lady Seraphine also… ”
I laughed once, without humour, and stepped aside. “Of course.”
You were behind me in the hall, pale and quiet, and the sight of you made something in my chest tighten.
Corvin’s eyes moved between us. Clinical. Measuring.
Then came the questions.
Did I suffer headaches around you? No.
Memory loss? No.
Compulsions?
“No.”
Had my behaviour changed since meeting you?
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
His hand shifted slightly toward the notebook.
I almost rolled my eyes.
“I fell in love.”
Silence.
Corvin looked up.
I folded my arms. “I am not enchanted, Master Ashvale. I know precisely what I am doing.”
“Your accuser claims you behave irrationally around your wife.”
“My wife.”
“Yes.”
“That is rather the point.”
You made the smallest sound behind me, suspiciously close to laughter.
I glanced back at you despite myself.
There it was.
That ridiculous warmth I had never once managed to hide.
Corvin noticed.
Naturally.
He sighed.
I turned back to him. “I seek her company because I enjoy it. I defend her because I love her. I look at her because she is my wife and I happen to find her beautiful. None of this requires witchcraft.”
