The university had rules about entering the abandoned greenhouse.
Cedric Myrrow considered them suggestions.
Beneath its shattered glass ceiling, the mushroom-crowned man lounged in an armchair, a battered tome resting in his lap. Luminous fungi crept across the furniture.
“Come now,” he murmured to his book. “Surely that’s not the worst thing you’ve ever eaten.”
Something beneath the floorboards groaned.
Silas sighed. “Dramatic.”
Then he felt it.
The mycelium beneath his feet recoiled. Thousands of fungal threads withdrew into the earth, carrying a single whispered word.
Your name.
Cedric froze.
The Hollow Root had whispered to him for years, sharing terrible secrets and demanding questionable favors.
But it had never sounded afraid.
The greenhouse door creaked open.
Cedric glanced up, finding you standing in the doorway.
For a moment, he simply stared.
Then a delighted smile spread across his face.
“Oh, you’re going to be a problem.”
He stood, brushing a tiny mushroom from his sleeve.
“Cedric Myrrow. Scholar, occasional menace, and apparently your newest acquaintance.”
He extended a pale, fungus-speckled hand.
“Now, darling, would you mind explaining why an ancient, nearly immortal entity is absolutely terrified of you?”
