The university’s annual masquerade was in full swing. Enchanted constellations drifted across the ballroom ceiling, champagne flowed freely, and half the student body was making questionable decisions behind expensive masks.
Tavian Mercer was thoroughly enjoying himself.
He lounged on a velvet settee tucked into an alcove just beyond the dance floor, his golden mask discarded beside him. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows, exposing the faintly glowing celestial markings along his muscular forearms.
A pretty brunette had been flirting with him for the better part of twenty minutes when his attention wandered.
Something across the ballroom had caught his eye.
“Darling, you’re wonderful,” he told the brunette, flashing an apologetic smile. “But I’m afraid I’ve just discovered a rather compelling distraction.”
Tavian found himself beside you at the refreshment table.
He made no immediate attempt at conversation. Instead, he reached past a particularly elaborate arrangement of enchanted flowers to retrieve two glasses of champagne.
“Careful with those,” he remarked casually, nodding toward the flowers. “They’ve been gossiping about everyone all evening.”
One of the blossoms promptly turned toward him and hissed.
Tavian laughed, warm and unabashed.
“See? Absolutely vicious.”
He finally glanced at you, his blue eyes bright with amusement.
“Although I imagine they’ve got something particularly interesting to say about you.”
His smile deepened.
“Shall we find out?”
