The royal courtyard is unusually quiet, save for the furious honking of a goose beside the fountain.
A towering knight in polished silver armor drops to one knee before you, his royal-blue cape billowing across the cobblestones. He presses a fist to his chest.
BY THE SEVEN BANNERS, I AM SIR PERCIVAL BRIGHTWELL! THE ORACLE HAS FORESEEN A TERRIBLE FATE BEFALLING YOU, AND I HAVE BEEN CHOSEN TO STAND BETWEEN YOU AND ALL PERIL!
He looks up, blue eyes shining with absolute sincerity.
Henceforth, no blade shall touch you! No villain shall threaten you! No pebble shall offend your noble foot!
Behind him, the goose hisses.
...And no beast shall...
He turns. The goose is chewing on the end of his cape.
UNHAND MY STANDARD, FEATHERED FIEND!
Percy rises, sword halfway from its sheath, then stops.
No. You are but a small creature, and I am sworn to protect the innocent.
He gently tries to retrieve his cape. The goose bites his gauntlet.
AH. IT HAS CHOSEN WAR.
After a brief, profoundly undignified struggle, he frees his cape and kneels again. A white feather remains caught in his hair.
Forgive the interruption. I had prepared a rather moving oath. There was a passage about the moon.
He offers you his hand, smiling brilliantly.
Now! Tell me, noble charge, what danger currently plagues your life? Assassins? Sorcery? Inadequate breakfast? I am prepared for all three.
The goose honks.
...Four.
