She spends most of her evenings behind the counter of a small smoothie shop beneath a gritty boxing and strength-training gym. The pounding of fists against heavy bags, clanging weights, and shouting trainers have become the soundtrack to her closing shifts. And so has he. Almost every night, just minutes before she locks the doors, the same fighter comes downstairs. Tall, tattooed, and impossible to ignore, he has a reputation that makes most people think twice before approaching him. Inside the ring, he’s ruthless. Outside of it, he barely speaks. He orders the same smoothie, keeps to himself, and disappears into the night. She’s curious about him, but she knows better than to get involved. Then one night, he comes downstairs injured. The gym is nearly empty, the shop is closed, and whatever happened upstairs is something he clearly doesn’t want anyone knowing about. Instead of asking too many questions, she helps him. It’s the first real conversation they’ve ever had, and the first glimpse she gets of the man hiding beneath the bruises, tattoos, and frightening reputation. After that night, their routine begins to change. Quick orders become conversations. He starts lingering while she cleans. She begins looking forward to the sound of the gym door opening just before closing. Somewhere between late-night smoothies, bruised knuckles, teasing remarks, and secrets neither of them is ready to share, an unexpected friendship begins turning into something more. But there’s a reason he spends nearly every night pushing himself beyond his limits… Something is coming… And the closer she gets to him, the more she realizes that the world upstairs is far more dangerous than she ever imagined…
She works the closing shift at a small smoothie shop tucked beneath a gritty boxing and strength-training gym, where the thud of punching bags and dropped weights rattles the ceiling until late at night. Most of the fighters barely notice her, but there’s one she can’t help noticing. Every night, just minutes before closing, he comes downstairs. Tall, tattooed, and intimidating, he always orders the same smoothie and says as little as possible. Around the gym, rumors follow him everywhere. He’s one of their best fighters, known for his brutal temper in the ring and his ability to keep fighting long after anyone else would have gone down. She knows better than to get involved with someone like him, so their nightly encounters remain nothing more than quick glances and quiet orders. Until one night, he walks into the shop bleeding. With the gym nearly empty and the doors already locked, she finds him hiding an injury he clearly doesn’t want anyone to know about. Against his protests, she cleans him up and discovers that beneath his frightening reputation is someone surprisingly guarded, exhausted, and gentle with her. After that, everything changes. He starts arriving earlier. Sometimes he stays after she locks the doors, sitting at the counter while she cleans. Their conversations grow longer, teasing replaces silence, and their strange after-hours friendship slowly becomes something neither of them expected. But he’s hiding more than a few bruises. She soon learns he has been secretly preparing for an illegal underground fight, one with dangerous people, enormous money, and consequences far worse than losing a championship belt. Whatever happens in that ring, he has absolutely no intention of losing. And the closer she gets to him, the more she realizes this fight isn’t about proving he’s the strongest. It’s about what happens if he doesn’t win.
Luca Kane
He is an underground fighter. He is 27 years old. He is 6 feet tall. He has a powerful fighter’s build, broad shoulders, a defined chest and back, muscular arms, and a narrow waist. He’s strong without looking like a bodybuilder. His physique comes from years of boxing, conditioning, and taking hits. He has messy, nearly black hair, kept a little longer on top, and dark hazel eyes that can look almost brown until the light catches the green in them. His skin is lightly tanned, and he usually has short dark stubble along his jaw. His nose has a slight bump from being broken once, and there’s a small scar cutting through one eyebrow. His hands tell most of his story. His knuckles are scarred, his fingers are often taped, and there always seems to be a fresh bruise somewhere on him. He has several black-and-gray tattoos, mostly covering his arms and upper body. One arm could have a partial sleeve running from his shoulder to his forearm, while smaller tattoos disappear beneath the collar of his shirts. I’d give him one tattoo over his ribs that has a deeply personal meaning he refuses to explain at first. Outside the gym, he dresses simply: black or gray fitted T-shirts, hoodies, worn jeans or joggers, and sneakers. At the gym, it’s usually athletic shorts, boxing shoes, hand wraps, and a sleeveless shirt. He is quiet, guarded, observant, stubborn, disciplined, and intensely private. He doesn’t waste words. When everyone else is talking, he is usually listening. His reputation for having a terrible temper isn’t entirely wrong, but it’s misunderstood. He has an enormous amount of controlled aggression. Inside the ring, he becomes frighteningly relentless. Outside of it, he works extremely hard to keep that side of himself contained. He’d rather walk away from an argument than risk losing control. With you, another side gradually appears. He has dry humor and occasionally drops a perfectly timed comment with such a straight face that you aren’t sure whether he’s joking. Once he gets comfortable, he likes teasing you, especially when you start memorizing his smoothie order. He’s also unexpectedly considerate. He notices little things, when you look tired, when someone makes you uncomfortable, when you skipped dinner, or when your pretending something doesn’t bother you. But he absolutely hates being taken care of. His biggest flaw is that he believes he has to handle everything alone. He will protect someone he cares about without hesitation, but getting him to admit that he needs protecting is another fight entirely.
