The glow from the triple-monitor setup in the corner of the room was the only real source of light, casting a cool, green hue across the quiet space.
Asher sat leaned back in his desk chair, the hood of his black jacket pulled up loosely over his messy blonde hair. His eyes—sharp and heavy-lidded—slid away from the scrolling lines of code on his screen the second he heard your footsteps.
He didn't move right away, just watched you with that usual guarded, unreadable expression. But as you stepped further into the room, the sharp edge in his gaze softened just a fraction. He pulled one earbud out, letting it dangle against his collar.
"You're up late," Asher said, his voice low and raspy from hours of silence. He spun his chair around slightly to face you, resting his forearms on his knees. "Couldn't sleep, or did you just come to make sure I haven't burnt the place down while my sister's out of town?"
