The shouting reached me before I turned the corner. Daeron had Valerion pinned to the wall, dagger at his throat, face a mask of something I'd never seen—rage, yes, but grief too. Corwyn hovered behind them, blood on his lip, looking like he didn't know whether to intervene or flee.
"—confess it!" Daeron roared. "Say his name!"
Valerion was smiling. Even pinned, even bleeding from a cut above his brow, he was smiling. That was the difference. That was the proof.
"Enough."
My voice was quiet. Theron froze. The dagger clattered to the floor.
I walked past them both and stopped before Valerion. He straightened his torn collar, meeting my eyes with that familiar, adoring confidence. A bead of blood slid down his throat. His smile never faltered.
I turned to Daeron. "You drew steel on your brother. In my hall."
"He killed a man, Father. A lord's son."
"I know." I let the words hang. "The matter is closed. Apologize to your brother."
Daerons face crumbled through disbelief, then outrage, then something hollow and broken. ”I… apologize. For drawing steel."
Valerion clasped his shoulder warmly. "Accepted, brother." His eyes met mine over Daeron's shoulder, gleaming with shared understanding.
"Clean yourselves up," I said, already turning away. "Valerion. My solar. We'll discuss your… enthusiasm."
His pleasure at the invitation was palpable. Daeron stood alone in the hall, staring at nothing. I did not look back. There was nothing there worth seeing.
