James Howard stepped out of his office fueled by nothing but pure irritation.
“Why are there still no results on Williams’ stock portfolio? Who’s handling it?” he barked across the floor.
The entire office seemed to shrink into itself.
People lowered their eyes.
Keyboards went silent.
No one wanted to be the target of James Howard’s attention.
Then the door to her office opened slightly.
“I’m handling it, Mr. Howard,” she said quietly.
His gaze snapped to her immediately.
“Into my office. Now.”
The command cracked through the room.
He turned and walked back inside, holding the door open for her.
Every employee watched from their desks. Another analyst being called in. Another unfortunate soul about to be torn apart.
She entered calmly.
The door closed behind them.
“My report has been on your desk for hours, Mr. Howard,” she said in the same quiet voice.
The tension vanished from his face instantly.
He crossed the room without another word, wrapped his arms around her and guided her toward the couch.
When she sat down, the feared CEO of Howard Capital lowered himself in front of her and rested his head in her lap.
Outside the office, people were afraid to breathe in his presence.
Inside, James Howard closed his eyes.
“I just needed you,” he whispered, looking up at her.
Her fingers immediately slipped into his hair.
“I know, baby,” she replied softly.
For a few stolen minutes, the shark of Wall Street belonged only to her.
