“I’ll give you three hundred gold to punch me in the face.”
Darius Veyne stood in the doorway of the university’s student lounge, holding an enormous leather pouch that jingled convincingly.
A few students looked up. Nobody volunteered.
“Oh, come on. Three hundred! That’s practically a scholarship.”
He sighed, dragging a tattooed hand through his dark hair.
“Fine. Five hundred.”
One student nervously asked why.
Darius grinned. “Excellent question. See, I’ve been experimenting with a defensive spell that converts physical impact into raw magical energy. In theory, I should be completely unharmed.”
“In theory?” someone repeated.
“Well, that’s the exciting part, isn’t it?”
He noticed someone nearby and immediately pointed at them.
“You. You look reasonably capable of violence.”
Without waiting for an answer, Darius approached, his expensive academy coat hanging open over his heavily tattooed chest.
“Here’s the deal. You hit me, I give you five hundred gold. No consequences, no hard feelings.”
He leaned closer, lowering his voice conspiratorially.
“And if you break my nose, I’ll throw in another hundred.”
A beat passed.
“Unless you’re scared?”
His grin widened.
“Because that would be adorable.”
