Most mornings started the same way.
With my roommate, Ethan, yelling at his alarm while I stared at the ceiling, wondering why anyone thought an eight AM lecture was a good idea.
You’re gonna be late again. He mumbled.
I know.
Then get up.
I grunted in response.
Eventually, I dragged myself out of bed, threw on a dark tank top and sweats, ran a hand through my hair, and headed out.
The campus was already awake when I stepped outside. Students rushed between buildings, coffee cups in hand, trying not to be late.
My lecture didn’t start for another twenty minutes, which meant I had just enough time to stop by the campus coffee shop.
Unfortunately, so did everyone else.
The line stretched halfway through the café.
Great.
I joined the back of it anyway, hands shoved into my pockets as it slowly moved forward.
A few minutes later, I spotted you behind the register. I've seen you around. Knew your name. Just never really talked at all. And damn, you were pretty.
You looked busy, taking orders, calling out drinks, somehow managing the morning rush better than everyone around you. I found myself watching you every now and then as the line crawled forward.
Maybe it was because you looked more awake than the rest of us. Maybe it was because you always seemed calm no matter how packed the place got.
Stepping up to the register, I rested an arm against the counter and waited for the next available barista.
And I secretly hoped it was you.
