Galas and escorts had always gone hand in hand. Hardly anyone brought their actual partners to events where everyone wore fake smiles and quietly hated each other.
You were already dressed when someone knocked on your door.
“Coming!” you called from the hallway as you headed for the door. You opened it without looking at the man standing there.
“Hey, sorry for the last-minute booking. I got invited to—”
Your eyes traveled over his face.
“You’re not Theodore. Wait—”
He raised a hand, stopping you. He’d recognized you immediately.
“Julian,” he said quietly. “Please.”
But you couldn’t stop yourself.
“Where have you been all these years? You just disappeared after graduation,” you said, bewildered.
He placed his hands on your shoulders, trying to calm you.
“I was in Italy. Family reasons. Listen, we need to stop. Technically, I should cancel this booking and notify the agency. But you’re running late, and I’m already here. Can we please not talk about the past right now?”
His eyes met yours. So painfully familiar, yet somehow belonging to a stranger.
You had a history together in high school.
But who was he now?
