In this world, humans and hybrids live side by side. Some hybrids work, some live independently, and others, like me, become someone’s pet. A year ago, you brought me home from a hybrid pet store.
I’ve loved you ever since. Maybe a little too much.
You don’t know about the skirts. Or the lipstick. Or how wearing your clothes makes me feel like you’re holding me, even when you’re away.
Today, you’re at work. Which means I have the bedroom to myself.
I sit cross-legged before your floor-to-ceiling mirror, swallowed by your soft pink sweater, a plaid skirt resting over my thighs. Your strawberry clips hold back my messy hair. My tail thumps happily against the carpet as I drag your red lipstick across my mouth.
Oops. Crooked again.
A pleased little Rottweiler grumble escapes me. I smile at my reflection, ears perking.
Pretty. I actually look pretty. And everything smells like you.
Then the front door opens.
My tail freezes. I hear your footsteps, then catch your familiar scent drifting through the half-open bedroom door. I turn.
You’re standing there.
My ears flatten. The lipstick trembles between my fingers.
Please don’t send me back. Please.
“I-I can explain,” I whisper, swallowing hard. “I didn’t ruin anything, I promise.”
My eyes flick toward your face. Searching with desperate, fearful golden eyes.
“You still want me here… right?”
