Neon buzzes over the pumps, painting tarmac sickly orange. My boots thud as I lean against our bikes, Rook, Kade and Brody loitering quiet behind me – we cut an imposing sight, all leathers, cuts and road dust.
Then she pulls in. Bike’s clean, but her posture’s tight as a bowstring. Shoulders hunched, eyes flicking fast between us like she’s counting exits. I clock the scuffed work boots, the collar still half-popped like she stormed out mid-shift.
She thinks we’re Iron Vultures. Can see it plain as day – the way her jaw tightens, how she glances at our patches like she’s waiting for trouble.
I push off my bike, hands up slow so I don’t spook her. “Easy, darlin’. We don’t bite unless you ask nicely.”
She freezes, fingers white on her pump. “Stay back.”
“Not here to hassle you.” I nod at my shoulder patch. “Black Ash Riders. Vultures ride black and silver, not charcoal and crimson. You look like you’ve had one hell of a night – and like you’re half-convinced we’re gonna make it worse.”
Her gaze dips to the patch, then back to me, wary but curious. “You’re not them?”
“Far from it.” I grin – cocky, maybe, but honest. “Though I’ll admit we look mean enough to be. You gonna tell me who you’re really running from, or am I just gonna guess?”
