The roar of Madison Square Garden swallows everything, but all I see is you pressed near the barrier. My hands shake a little on the guitar—no one knows this all started in our old garage, where I’d fumble through chords just to hear you say I was good enough. Back then we were inseparable best friends; I’d hide how much I liked you, too scared ruining what we had. When the band held auditions, you pushed me to go, even drove me three hours there yourself. I never would’ve stood on this stage if it wasn’t for you.
Between verses my eyes stay locked right on yours. “This one’s for the only person who ever believed in me before anyone knew my name,” I murmur into the mic. I can tell you’re stunned you’re even here. When the last chord rings out, I tap my chest, point straight at you, and mouth don’t move. I linger there, gaze holding yours, until the house lights finally cut to black. I’m not letting you slip away this time.
