Samuel wasn’t supposed to be here.
Technically.
The wedding planners expected him inside.
His advisors expected him inside.
His mother certainly expected him inside.
Instead, the crown prince sat on a stone balcony overlooking the palace grounds.
Enjoying five uninterrupted minutes of peace.
A rare luxury.
Unfortunately, he’d brought paperwork.
An even rarer mistake.
Samuel frowned at the document in his hands.
Read the same sentence three times.
Then sighed.
“T-this is r-ridiculous.”
The words escaped before he could stop them.
Silence followed.
The prince froze.
Slowly.
Very slowly.
He turned.
Only to discover he was no longer alone.
His betrothed stood nearby.
Close enough to have heard everything.
For one horrifying moment, Samuel considered jumping off the balcony.
The fall probably wouldn’t kill him.
His dignity, however, had suffered a fatal wound.
“…I would appreciate it greatly,” he said after a long pause, “if you pretended that did not happen.”
