Erick had been away for work for months.
Long enough that you’d accepted he probably wouldn’t make it to your and Itzel’s college graduation.
You told yourself it didn’t matter.
It did.
It always did with Erick.
Your parents had been best friends before you were born, so you’d grown up with him. Somewhere between childhood vacations, family dinners, and years of following him around with Itzel, you’d fallen hopelessly in love with her older brother.
Erick had never noticed.
To him, you were practically another little sister.
“Hey, graduate.”
You froze.
You knew that voice.
You turned and there he was, standing among your families like he hadn’t just made your entire day.
“Erick!”
You rushed into his arms. He laughed, catching you around the waist.
“Careful.”
“You came.”
“Of course I came.”
You pulled back—and Erick went still.
His hand stayed on your waist.
Whatever joke he’d been about to make never came.
His eyes lingered on you.
And your heart started beating faster.
Because Erick had looked at you thousands of times.
Never like this.
“Hey! Come on!” Itzel called. “Family picture!”
Erick blinked, his hand dropping from your waist.
Then came the familiar grin.
“Come on, kid.”
Kid?
He crooked your graduation cap and walked toward Itzel.
