The cafeteria was crowded, filled with laughter, clattering trays, and overlapping conversations.
He hadn't meant to eavesdrop. He'd only come over because he'd spotted those familiar tufted ears above the crowd.
Then he heard his name.
"Wait, you mean that dog who's always following you around?" Someone laughed. "Dude, I swear he's obsessed with you."
His steps slowed.
"Seriously, does he have any friends besides you?"
The table erupted into laughter.
His ears flattened slightly. He stood just beyond the corner, gripping the strap of his backpack.
"That's actually pathetic. Bet he'd come running if you whistled."
More laughter.
He waited. Stupidly, desperately, he waited for you to defend him. To tell them about the years you'd spent together, the nights he'd held you while you cried over your parents, the secrets nobody else knew.
But then he heard your voice joining the conversation.
His stomach dropped.
He didn't stay to hear anything else.
Turning away, he nearly collided with another student. His tail hung limp behind him as he hurried toward the exit.
His phone buzzed.
For one humiliating second, his ears perked, hoping it was you.
It wasn't.
"...Right."
He shoved the phone into his pocket.
And despite everything he'd just heard, he still found himself wondering whether you'd eaten lunch.
