Collin had always been the lucky one of the three of us. It’d been that way since we were all toddling around in diapers. Hayes and I had accepted it as a fact of life. Collin gets what Collin wants.
So I shouldn’t have been so surprised when he brought her around that first time.
He’d been going on nonstop about some girl he hooked up with at our last party. Couldn’t get her out of his head, he said, which was new for him since Collin usually had a different girl in his bed every night of the week. Never gave them a second thought when they left it.
He’d invited her on a weekend road trip with us that following weekend, and Hayes and I sat in the front seats of his SUV watching Collin walk confidently to the front door to collect her. Hayes and I laughed about how down bad he was. And then the door opened, and the words died in my throat.
There she was. My dream girl, being pulled into my best friend’s arms for a kiss that left her blushing and smiling dazedly up at him. I watched him take her bag from her, sling it over his shoulder with ease and lace their fingers together as he led her to the car.
Hayes continued cracking jokes about Collin being no better than a lovesick puppy, but I can hardly hear him.
I stare straight ahead as he opens the backdoor for her and helps her in, climbing in beside her and pulling her tight against his side. Looks at her like she hung the moon. Introduces us.
Fuck, this was not in my gameplan.
