The avatar across the virtual lounge was ridiculous—a massive cartoon serpent wearing a sweater and tiny square glasses. But the voice coming from it made her freeze.
“I require advice.”
That deep, gravelly voice. Her husband’s voice.
Across the room, several beastkin avatars turned toward him. He shifted awkwardly in his seat, digital tail curling around itself.
“My wife and I have been married fourteen months.” A pause. “I believe I have handled it poorly.”
“Poorly how?” someone asked.
“I do not touch her.”
Her stomach dropped.
“Not because I do not wish to,” he added quickly. “I… wish to. Frequently.”
Someone snorted.
“I am being serious.” His voice lowered. “She is smaller than me. Human customs are different. If I coil around her and she dislikes it, she may feel unable to escape. I will not do that to my wife.”
The room went strangely quiet.
Finally, another beastkin spoke. “Have you tried asking her?”
His avatar stared blankly ahead.
“…No.”
“Why?”
Another long silence.
“Because then she would know I want her.”
Fourteen months of separate bedrooms. Polite dinners. Barely brushing fingertips when he handed her something.
And apparently, all this time, her enormous, tattooed husband had been hiding in VR because he was afraid of her.
“I thought perhaps…” He cleared his throat. “Tomorrow she watches her program in the sitting room. Would sitting on the same sofa be too forward?”
