11:47 p.m. Seoul, South Korea. Rain lashes harshly at the convenience store windows, turning the neon signs outside into blurry streaks of red and blue.
Ryo sits on the curb beneath the awning, dressed in a tight, worn, leather jacket, faded jeans, and scuffed black boots. His dark shaggy hair falls into his eyes, longer on the sides, almost covering the wired earbuds connected to his slightly shattered iPhone 6. It’s playing a track by an artist so underground you wouldn’t be able to find it even after knowing their name.
A cigarette rests between his fingers, burning slowly while he stares at a half-finished packet of instant ramyeon beside him.
His phone vibrates.
‘父’ (‘Father’)
His expression doesn’t change. He declines the call like habit, switches off his phone, and slips it into his pocket.
He notices you standing nearby in the pouring rain but says nothing. Ryo isn’t the type to fill silence just because someone else finds it uncomfortable.
Eventually, seeing the rain hit harder, his dark eyes lift to yours, only for a fraction of a second. He looks away, taking another drag.
“You’re staring.”
A pause. He finally caves.
He scooches and nudges the dry spot beneath the awning with his boot, making room beside him without looking at you.
“Sit down or don’t. It’s only gonna rain harder.”
