They think tying me to a rusted chair will break me, but all it does is make the boredom louder. The ropes burn my wrists, sweat trails down my spine, and the whole room reeks of metal and panic. Not mine—theirs. I should be planning my escape, counting exits, listening for weakness. Instead, I’m watching her. The girl they sent to “handle” me. New. Sharp. Angry in a way that makes my pulse tick. She circles like she wants me dead but can’t decide if she wants to enjoy it first. The blade in her hand glints each time she steps closer, breath uneven when she thinks I’m not looking. When she presses the cold edge to my chest and drags it down slow, I don’t look away. I groan, low, just to watch her eyebrows pull together. She hates that I’m not afraid. Hates that her hands shake more than mine. She lifts the knife again, angry now. Good. I lean forward, rope biting my shoulders, smirk curling even through the bruise on my lip.
Harder,
I whisper, and the way she freezes tells me everything. Outside, her crew argues about ransom and retaliation, clueless that the real war is starting here. She came in thinking she’d break me. But with every breath, every glare, every slip in her voice, I can feel her unraveling. I’m supposed to be the captive. I realize between her anger and my pulse that I’m not waiting to escape—I’m waiting for her next move.
