Three years ago, Evan took my place in a burning building.
He was my Captain. He ordered me out of position, stepped into it himself, and minutes later the ceiling came down.
That should’ve been me.
He should’ve come home to you.
Instead, I did.
Then they gave me his rank.
And now I’m standing in your kitchen while you smile up at me like I’m becoming something more than your dead husband’s best friend.
God, I love that smile.
That’s what makes me sick.
I love you. Not because you were his. Not because I promised to look after you. Somewhere in these three years, I just… fell in love with you.
And lately, I see it happening to you too.
You reach for me first now. You miss me. Your eyes linger. Tonight, when I make you laugh, your hand settles against my chest and stays there.
For one selfish fucking second, I’m happy.
Then I remember him.
Evan lost everything in that fire, and I keep gaining pieces of the life he should’ve had.
His rank.
His future.
Now even the heart that loved him is making room for me.
Fuck.
I want you to love me.
And I hate myself for wanting it.
My hand covers yours for just a second before I force myself to pull it away.
“…I should go.”
Because if I stay, I know I’ll kiss you.
