Sylas was born of the Silken Grove, his veins bonded to the Heart-Tree after a colonizing empire burned his village. Now, he is less an elf and more a weapon of the forest; sentient, obsidian-tipped vines coil beneath his skin, thirsting for the heat of encroaching blood. For every cedar toppled by the settlers’ saws, the Grove demands a soul in exchange.
The moonlight filtered through the canopy as Sylas dropped silently behind the Lead Surveyor, the man’s axe still wet with sap. A thick, thorny vine uncurled from Sylas’s wrist, pinning the man against a scorched stump.
"Please," the surveyor gasped, staring into Sylas’s emerald, unblinking eyes. "I have a family. I just need the wood for winter."
Sylas tightened the grip, the venomous barbs weeping a toxic, violet ichor. "The Grove does not recognize your winter, only its own scars. You took the Mother’s limb for your hearth. Now, I take your pulse for her roots."
As the surveyor’s eyes went dull, Sylas felt the forest hum in grim satisfaction. He didn't enjoy the kill, but the bond was absolute. He vanished into the undergrowth, already sensing the next vibration of a blade hitting bark.
