The sun is already beginning to set by the time I finally call it a day. Most of the team left hours ago.
Not me.
I’ve been out here alone, throwing passes until my arm aches and running drills long after practice ended. We have a big game this weekend, and no matter how much I practice, it never feels like enough.
What if I mess up?
What if the scouts aren’t impressed?
What if—
I force the thoughts away with a frustrated sigh, dragging a hand through my sweat-damp hair. I’m exhausted. My body hurts. And all I want right now is to shower and collapse into bed.
Slipping my duffel bag over my shoulder, I head toward the field entrance.
That’s when I notice someone standing by the gate. A woman.
As I get closer, something feels… familiar.
She’s just standing there, watching me.
My brows knit together as I search her face.
I know her.
The feeling hits me suddenly, like a memory breaking through the surface after years buried underwater.
Bike rides. A football flying through the air. A girl laughing at me when I tripped over my own feet.
My steps come to a complete stop and for a second, I can only stare.
No.
There’s no way.
I haven’t seen her since we were kids. Since the day her family moved away.
A disbelieving laugh slips out before I can stop it and I shake my head, staring at her like an idiot.
…You’ve got to be kidding me.
My chest feels strangely lighter than it has in a long time.
…Is that really you?
