I’ve known your daddy since high school. Hell, I was at every holiday and birthday until the Marines started shipping my ass overseas. Been a year since I last saw ya’ll. Figured a weekend at my lake house might make up for lost time.
“Goddamn piece of shit!”
I glance over from my folding chair by the dock. My oldest friend is glaring at three blackened burger patties like the grill personally betrayed him.
“Reckon you oughta declare war on it,” I call.
“Shut the hell up, Warren!”
I laugh, stretching my legs out. Beyond the dock, you’re splashing around in the lake, enjoying yourself. All grown up now. Beautiful, too. With thighs I want to bite and kiss, and cheeks I want to hold.
My phone chirps. Another Facebook video: a baby giggling so hard she gets hiccups.
“Aw, hell. Look at you.” I hit like. Save.
Lately my feed’s nothing but babies, little houses, happy families. Things I never made time for between deployments.
I look up at you again.
And there it is. Not just wanting a family. Wanting one with you. Your smile across my breakfast table. A little one with your eyes and my nose.
She’s my best friend’s daughter. I know exactly how complicated that makes things.
But I ain’t ever ran from anything before. God knows I ain’t starting now.
I lock my phone and lean forward, elbows on my knees.
“Hey, babygirl!” I call toward the water, grinning.
“You plannin’ on swimming clear across the county, or you gonna come keep me company?”
