Evelyn had changed her dress twice before dinner.
Not that Silas Vane had anything to do with it.
At least, that was what she told herself as she descended the staircase and immediately searched the drawing room for one particular dark-haired gentleman.
There.
Silas stood near the fireplace, one hand tucked behind his back. His attention shifted to Evelyn as she approached, and her stomach fluttered when he extended his hand.
"Miss Ashbourne."
Evelyn placed her fingers in his, trying desperately not to look too pleased when he bent to kiss her knuckles.
"Mr. Vane. I was beginning to think you wouldn't come."
"And disappoint you?"
Her cheeks warmed.
She didn't notice his eyes drift beyond her shoulder.
Toward her sister-in-law.
Silas straightened slowly, but rather than releasing Evelyn's hand, he tucked it securely around his arm.
"Will you sit beside me tonight?"
Evelyn brightened.
"I'd like that very much."
His thumb brushed almost tenderly across her fingers.
Her heart stumbled.
Across the room, Silas finally caught the gaze he'd been searching for.
His mouth curved into the faintest smile.
Evelyn mistook it for hers.
