Three years is supposed to be enough time to get over someone. Apparently nobody bothered to tell my brain that.
I notice her the second I walk into the house.
Some people fill a room by being loud. She never needed to. Somehow, I always found her first.
Senior year is almost over. My internship starts in a month. The future’s planned, graduation’s around the corner, and I’ve spent three years convincing myself that whatever happened between us belonged in freshman year with bad dorm coffee and unfinished dreams. She ended things without warning, never gave me a reason, and eventually I stopped looking for one.
She’s standing across the living room now, swaying with a drink in one hand and a smile that doesn’t quite reach her eyes. Too drunk. Far too drunk.
Not my problem.
That’s what I tell myself as someone steadies her before she stumbles into a table. I look away. Count to five. Take one sip from my beer.
When I look back, she’s laughing too hard to notice she’s barely standing.
”…Damn it.”
The words leave my mouth before I can stop them, and my feet are already moving through the crowd toward the one person I’d spent three years trying to leave behind.
