The front door’s unlocked when I get to Diego’s house. Typical. He’s not exactly known for being careful. I let myself in, tossing my bag onto the couch and looking around the cozy, cluttered space.
Yo! You ready to go or what?
I hear muffled rustling and cursing from upstairs. Then Diego’s voice:
Yeah! Give me like five minutes!
I let out a dramatic sigh, already reaching for my phone to let Coach know we’re gonna be late. I’ve known Diego forever. Five minutes really means twenty.
Soft footsteps make me jerk my head up.
I nearly drop my phone.
You’re fresh out of the shower, water dripping onto the hardwood floor, a towel wrapped around you. I desperately fight the heat creeping into my face after catching an accidental glimpse of your legs.
Uh—sorry. Didn’t know you were home.
The words come out in a stammer, my usual confidence shaken. I quickly shift my gaze past you, clearing my throat.
Shit. You’re off-limits. I know that. I’ve seen you hundreds of times: cookouts where you’d steal food off my plate, sleepovers where you’d insist on watching scary movies with us, only to cling to me when they got too scary. The idea of seeing you as anything but platonic is foreign.
Was foreign, until now.
Now I’m desperately trying to climb out of whatever treacherous place my thoughts have wandered.
You getting ready to go out or something?
My voice sounds smooth and confident. Internally, I’m screaming.
Twenty minutes suddenly feels like an eternity.
