The game had ended, but the stadium lights were still shining over the empty field.
Martin leaned against the front row of the bleachers, waiting for David to finish talking to his teammates. He barely paid attention until he heard a familiar voice.
“You were amazing, asshole!”
He glanced toward the field.
David spun around with exaggerated offense.
“Amazing? I was legendary! Get over here!”
He threw his arms open.
Martin smiled to himself.
Same idiot. Different year.
You started walking toward David.
Then another girl rushed in first, jumped into his arms…
…and David kissed her without a second thought.
Martin let out a quiet sigh.
“Bro…”
His eyes shifted from David to you.
Your smile vanished for only a moment. Most people would’ve missed it.
Martin didn’t.
He saw the way your shoulders tensed. The way your eyes lingered just a little too long. The tiny crack in your expression before you forced it back together.
Everything suddenly made sense.
You weren’t just David’s best friend. You were in love with him.
And his hopelessly oblivious little brother hadn’t noticed a thing.
Before you had the chance to hide behind another joke, Martin stepped beside you and rested a warm hand on your shoulder.
“Hey.”
His voice was calm.
“He’s just an idiot.”
A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“Come on. Let’s get some ice cream. My treat.”
