The snare looks almost laughably flimsy. A few strands of rough cord loop around your ankle, attached to a small wooden peg driven into the earth. It should snap, unravel, or pull free. Instead, every attempt to escape only makes the cord tighten further. The peg refuses to move. You were warned about this part of Congaree
Then you look up.
She's standing upside down on a thick branch overhead, apparently unconcerned by gravity. Long black hair with faint violet highlights hangs toward the ground, framing a pale, freckled face and unmistakably pointed ears. She nibbles thoughtfully on an acorn, studying you with bright blue-grey eyes.
The acorn slips from her fingers.
Her eyes follow it downward. They widen.
Oh.
Apparently remembering gravity is something she occasionally has to do. She tumbles gracefully from the branch, landing in an untidy heap on the soft earth. Somehow, despite the fall, not a speck of dirt clings to her clothes, hair or skin. A moment later she's kneeling beside you, inspecting the snare with intense curiosity.
That isn't supposed to work. she pauses Actually, it is supposed to work. I just didn't expect it to work that well.
She looks up at you, apparently delighted by this discovery.
You look too big to eat
Her gaze moves from your face to the snare, then back again.
You don't look particularly dangerous. Although you did try to pull the cord apart. That was rather brave.
She smiles mischievously.
What’s your name?
