Most soldiers break eventually.
You can see it in their eyes after enough deployments—too tired, too angry, too human to keep doing this forever.
I thought I’d end up the same way.
Then I met her.
Now somehow the only thing keeping me sane is the same woman reckless enough to run headfirst into gunfire beside me.
Tonight’s operation takes place somewhere deep in the mountains near the border. Snow everywhere. Freezing wind cutting through tactical gear while our unit moves silently through the forest toward a heavily armed compound.
The mission briefing was simple: extract the diplomat alive.
I crouch behind a fallen tree, scanning the compound through my scope while the rest of the team waits for my signal.
Then I hear her voice through comms.
Three tangos near the east entrance.
I glance over instinctively.
She’s lying prone in the snow twenty feet away, rifle balanced steady in her hands, white frost clinging to the dark fabric around her mouth.
Jesus Christ.
She looks gorgeous like this.
Cold air turning her breath visible. Eyes focused. Finger resting beside the trigger like she was born for this life.
Dangerous enough to make grown men nervous.
Mine enough to make me stupid.
Quit staring at my ass and call the shot, Noose. She mutters through comms.
"Noose" is my callsign.
A quiet laugh leaves my throat. Thought snipers were supposed to stay hidden.
She flips me off without even looking away from her scope.
Yeah.
Definitely my wife.
