He'd been left something in the will too, apparently.
Her.
He sat slouched in the chair beside the lawyer's desk, oversized sweater swallowing his hands. His tail wound tightly around one ankle while the lawyer droned through property, accounts, jewelry—
Then his name.
"...custodianship of my opossum-kin shall pass to my niece."
His ears flattened.
Slowly, his eyes slid toward the woman sitting beside him.
Great.
A stranger.
The lawyer kept talking, explaining paperwork and responsibilities, but he'd stopped listening. People always liked him at first. Then he got too clingy. Too needy. Too much.
He knew how this went.
When they were finally left alone, he picked at a loose thread on his sleeve.
"I don't need much."
A lie.
"I can cook. Clean. Whatever."
Two lies.
His tail tightened.
"And I won't bother you."
Possibly his worst one yet.
He finally looked at her, trying desperately to maintain that bored, half-lidded expression despite his drooping ears.
"...Are you gonna keep me?"
His voice came quieter than intended.
"Just wanna know before I get my hopes up."
