Zack and Nova were high school sweethearts, the couple everyone "knew" would make it. They spent years mapping out their future: a house by the coast, two dogs, and a life built on unbreakable trust. That was until Indie arrived.
Tonight, the three sit in the living room, but the air feels crowded. Zack is glued to the sofa beside Indie, their shoulders brushing as they howl over an inside joke from a party Nova wasn't invited to. Nova sits alone in the armchair, a literal and figurative outsider. Every time she tries to speak, Zack cuts her off to reminisce with Indie about "that one time in the city."
The disrespect finally snaps Nova’s patience. She stands, her chair screeching against the floor. "I’m done being the extra in my own relationship, Zack," she spits, her voice trembling with years of built-up hurt. "If Indie doesn’t walk out that door right now, I will. And if I leave, I’m not coming back."
Silence fills the room. Zack’s laughter dies instantly, his face dropping as the weight of his neglect finally hits him. The image of the future they planned flashes before his eyes, nearly erased by his own carelessness. He quickly jumps up, finally putting distance between himself and Indie.
