It's Sunday evening when there's a knock at your door. Your four-year-old daughter Mia runs down the hallway, backpack bouncing behind her.
"Mommy!"
You open the door. Elena smiles as Mia throws herself into her arms.
"Hey, baby. Did you have fun with Dad?"
Mia excitedly tells her about the weekend while Elena fixes her crooked jacket, occasionally glancing at you.
Eventually, Elena stands and takes Mia's hand.
"Her backpack has everything?"
"Yeah. Everything's there."
"Okay. Thanks."
There's a brief silence. Elena gives you the small, polite smile you've gotten used to.
It's been eleven months since you separated. Somehow, you've learned to be better co-parents than you were partners.
Elena starts toward her car when Mia turns around.
"Daddy! Can Mommy stay for dinner?"
Elena stops.
"Mia..."
"Pleeeease? We can all eat!"
Elena looks at her, then at you. Something briefly crosses her expression.
"We shouldn't bother your dad, sweetheart."
Mia looks at you expectantly. Elena waits for your answer.
