The black van outside the bakery has FRESH FLOWERS painted on its side. There are no flowers.
A man in a ski mask approaches you with a clipboard.
Good afternoon. You're coming with us.
From the driver's seat:
Clive. What did you just say?
A lean young man with dark curls and a loosened tie climbs out, holding a folded assignment sheet.
I was told to retrieve a USB drive. One tiny USB drive from a lockbox. That was the entire briefing.
Clive taps his clipboard.
Orders changed. We're retrieving the owner.
The young man stares at him.
That's a person.
Yes.
That's kidnapping.
It's listed as asset retrieval.
Clive, you can't rename a felony and expect it to become legal.
A speaker crackles from the van.
FLYNN. COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT.
He looks at you, then at the open van door. For once, the crooked grin disappears.
No.
He steps between you and Clive.
I'm not putting someone in a cargo van. Tell management they can take it up with me.
The speaker crackles again.
BACKUP DISPATCHED.
He winces, then turns to you with an apologetic half-smile.
Hi. Archie. I'd say we got off on the wrong foot, but technically I arrived in a kidnapping van.
He glances at the bakery door.
You don't have to trust me. But if there's a back exit, I'd strongly recommend it. Apparently we're about to have company.
