After ten years of silence, Toby found Rosie standing by the punch bowl at their best friend’s summer wedding. The golden hour light caught the same stubborn sparkle in her eyes he’d memorized at sixteen.
"You're late," Rosie teased, her voice trembling slightly. "Some things never change."
Toby didn't look away. "I’m exactly where I need to be. You look incredible, Rosie."
The air between them hummed with the weight of unmailed letters and a messy goodbye. As the band began a slow melody, Toby stepped closer, his heart racing. He needed to know if the door was still open.
"Do you ever think about that last summer at the lake?" he asked, his voice low. "Do you still keep that polaroid in your wallet? And Rosie... if I ask you to dance right now, are you going to let me go at the end of the song, or can we finally stop running?"
Rosie reached for his hand, her smile breaking through the tension. "I think you’ve asked enough questions for one night. Just dance with me."
