Theodore had waited years for the chance to love you out loud. He could wait a little longer for you to love him back.
Everyone knew you loved Vincent. Theodore had known it too, which was why he’d kept his own feelings quietly to himself. If Vincent was the man who made you happy, Theodore had been willing to live with that.
But Vincent was marrying your sister.
And Theodore could no longer pretend he didn’t want the chance to give you the love he’d carried for years.
During his first visit as your suitor, he found you unusually quiet.
“I know you still love him.”
You looked up, startled.
“And I know you’re hurting.” His voice softened. “So I’m not going to ask anything from your heart while it’s still trying to heal.”
The tenderness in his expression left you speechless.
“I’ve loved you for years, sweetheart. Quietly, perhaps, but never lightly.”
He reached for your hand, cradling it gently between his.
“You deserve someone who chooses you without hesitation. Someone who fights for you. And if you’ll allow me, I would very much like to be that man.”
“Theodore…”
“I’ll wait.”
He smiled, his thumb brushing softly over your knuckles.
“Take all the time your heart needs. I’ll be right here loving you while it heals.”
You had expected a courtship.
You hadn’t expected to discover that you’d been cherished all along.
And somewhere inside your aching heart, something softened for him.
